Here you find some of the questions which are most often asked by my patients.

What is psychiatry?

Psychiatry is concerned with mood disorder and mental disorders. Some of the more common disorders are: depression, anxiety, neuroses, obsessions and compulsions, schizophrenias and others.

What is neurology?

Neurology is concerned with brain disorders, spine disorders and diseases of the peripheral nerves. Examples are: strokes, vertigo, palsies, paraplegias, carpal tunnel syndromes, diabetic polyneuropathies, multiple sclerosis, and alike.

What is an EEG?

An EEG is an electroencephalogram and it is most important in evaluating epilepsy and all other seizure disorders. It is also important in aging and headache. It is of no direct value in the assessment of blood circulation in the brain. For this one needs Doppler sonography of the cranial arteries.

What is the advantage of ear acupuncture?

In ear acupuncture one has a whole body scheme in a very small area which can easily be treated with permanent needles for a time span of one week. This is time span guarantees a more intensive and prolonged effect.

What is the use of bright light therapy?

Bright light therapy is used in winter depression and in regulation of sleep (late start of sleep and early awakening)

What can help in depression?

Depression has two columns of therapy: psychotherapy and antidepressant medication.
Note: Antidepressants are not addicting.

Do you have Migraines?

Once in a lifetime one should make a thorough examination with neurological examination, EEG, CCT. When migraine comes too often one should give a prophylactic medication like beta blockers. In acute migraine it is necessary to give 1000 mg of aspirin or paracetamol plus metoclopramid against nausea or a modern triptan like sumatriptan.
Also important are relaxation techniques, migraine diary and psychotherapy.
Headaches – what`s next?
Same procedure as in migraine. Additionally sinusitis has to be ruled out, dental problems, problems of the cervical spine, psychic problems, aggression, anxiety, stress, helplessness, depression and others.

Driving license – what`s the procedure?

Complete exploration, physical and neurologic examination; EEG plus photostimulation and hyperventilation in the case of a seizure disorder, in the event of slow mentation and concentration disturbances we do perform cognitive testing and computer assisted testing of divided attention. This should give an indication as to whether a patient can deal with different conflicting stimuli in an adequate time while driving a car. Sometimes an additional supervised car ride with a driving trainer is also necessary.
